Installing Ubuntu on the Intel Core i5 3550

The Intel Core i5 3550 uses the Intel HD 4000 processor integrated graphics. Several operating systems, including Ubuntu, have compatibility issues with this graphics chipset. The default installation displays a black screen and shows an error via KVM after 30 seconds, causing KVM to disconnect.

Resolution

When installing Ubuntu, after the initial language selection, press F6 to display the additional install options and enable the nomodeset option. This will force the basic video driver, which is 100% compatible with the server.
